The American Shad occurs natively in the Atlantic Coast of North America. In 1871 and 1881, shad was introduced into the Sacramento River in California and is today up and down the Pacific Coast as far south as Baja Mexico and as far north as Alaska. It has also found its way into a few lakes. Mostly, by man pumping water that hold small fish or fertilized eggs into their lakes where they grow to adulthood. Like the salmon, the American Shad is an anadromous fish that ascends coastal rivers to spawn.

Millerton Lake Shad Fishing
Some say Millerton Lake in Madera and Fresno Counties in California is the only place in the world where these fish reproduce naturally. This is where San Joaquin Guide Service targets them. Most fisherman have never heard of the American Shad. When they think shad, it normally means small bait fish, but these are completely different. The California state record is 7 pounds, 5 ounces. Some people call them the poor man’s tarpon by the way they look and the amount of time they spend out of water while on your line. They are great fun on light tackle from 2 lb to 8 lb test.
San Joaquin Peak Shad Fishing
Also great on fly tackle. We believe that these are some of the best sport fish in California, not only because of the great fight they put up, but also the chance at a 100 fish day. It is very possible these fish school up by the thousands. The season is short starting in April, peaking in June, and can last until September, all depending on water temperatures and flows.
