San Joaquin Guide Service targets carp on the clear San Joaquin River. We can also take clients on other lakes around Central California. We pursue these fish several different ways, either with heavy bass fishing tackle, using corn or dough balls as bait. Some people even use fly fishing gear. We like to either spear fish for them or use a bow and arrow. Many people who have tried spear fishing said it is one of the most exciting ways to pursue fish.

San Joaquin River Carp Fishing
Many people think of carp as big dumb trash fish. I believe they are one of the most cautious, powerful fish that swim in the freshwater. Once you put your hands on one in the 20 to 30 pound range, you will understand especially if you spear fish for it and get pulled around and feel this animal’s surprising power.
Common carp are not native to California. This is one of the largest members of the minnow family and close relative to the goldfish. Carp are very prolific and are excellent survivors, as they are able to tolerate a wide range of conditions and bottom types. The IGFA all tackle record is 75 pounds, 11 ounces. California state record is 52 pounds. The average size San Joaquin Guide Service targets is 15 to 20 pounds, although we have landed some pushing 40 pounds.
