Striped bass are not native to California. They were imported in the 1800s to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Since then they have migrated and been transported all over the state. Striped bass are native to saltwater but spawn in freshwater rivers like salmon. But unlike salmon, after spawning adults survive, they return to saltwater. In California, there are several lakes that have been stocked with them in which they are the top of the food chain.

San Joaquin Striped Bass Fishing Locations

San Joaquin Guide Service fishes for stripers in four locations: San Luis Reservoir; O’Neals Four Bay which holds the state record of 67 pounds, 8 ounces; Millerton Lake. These three locations have had fish caught over 60 pounds in the last few years. The fourth place we fish is the San Joaquin River, our home water. The striper in the river can be very tricky to target. There are many variables but your guide knows how to find them. In fact, before clients come out we try to have a good idea of the fish in the area. Your guide, Louis Moosios, is a member of the California Striped Bass Association. He tries to fish all of their tournaments. He has a good success record with the people he guides as well as himself in these tournaments.

Stripers can be caught using a wide variety of techniques and baits, all of which can be great fun. Some types can be very relaxing, mostly just sitting waiting for the bite, or you can be aggressive casting for them. One of the great things about stripers here is that you never know when you get a bite if it is going to be a 2 pound fish or a 60 pound fish. Knowing that, you must balance your tackle appropriately to have fun with the small ones but be able to get that record fish to the boat. We only use quality tackle we know will handle the stress. Striped bass can bite all day but normally being on the water early is suggested.
